Hiking --- 10/15/2010 - 10/17/2010 --- Adirondacks
It looks like a winter wonderland here. Yeah, it looks like a winter wonderland here. Why are you taking off your boot?
Drove up to the Dacks Friday night. We arrived at the free campground near the Chapel Pond outlet and had to shovel away 3" of slush and snow to set up the tent! Rain and sleet fell most of the night. Saturday we hiked Giant Mountain. From the campground, we walked east to the ridge trail, up to the summit of Giant on that trail, then back down via the Roaring Brook Falls trail, then back to the campground along route 73. There was 10-12" of heavy wet snow on top of Giant! It made for a long day of hiking. Still we finished over eight miles and 3400' of elevation gain and loss before dark even with an 11am start. We rewarded ourselves with a classy dinner of quiche, wine and cheesecake! Sunday we wanted to climb Chapel Pond Slab, but it was a waterfall. So we toured Keene and Lake Placid. Finishing with lunch and pie at the Noonmark Diner before heading home.
