Rock Climbing --- 4/8/2011 - 4/11/2011 --- Gunks
Drove to the Gunks Friday night. Saturday was a beautiful sunny day. We climbed Something Interesting, Hans' Puss, and Feast of Fools (which Emily onsighted on top rope!) Then we learned that Keith's rope was still stuck on Yellow Wall where it had been left the week before. Since I'm a Rope Rescue instructor, I decided to rescue a rope (hahaha). We ran into Julia and Adam on the way, and their donation of a second rope to the cause made the project easy. A quick solo up Silly Chimney and a double rope rappel solved the problem. As we were packing up, I thought I saw Alex Honnold walk past. This was very confusing because I had no idea he was at the Gunks and it seemed highly unlikely that Alex Honnold would walk past me at the base of Yellow Wall. He was long past us when I decided to try to talk to him. This led to one of the most awkward conversations of my life...
Me (shouting): Are you Alex Honnold?
Alex: Yeah.
Me (still shouting): Really?
Alex: Ummm... Yeah.
That's it. My brush with fame. Other Jeff and Amy took a picture with him. Also awkward, but with a much cooler result. Oh well. With Alex gone, we had time for a quick run up the first pitch of Ursula, then back to the car for dinner.
Sunday was cold and windy. After a slow start we packed our bags and headed out to Millbrook. My first time there. The hike was straightforward and we found the rappel tree no problem. We climbed Westward Ha and it was quite enjoyable. Too cold to rappel again (I was thinking about Cruise Control) we took the ridge trail back to the west trapps lot (parkour!!!) and called it a day.
Monday we didn't have time to climb. Instead we opted for a nice pancake breakfast and a quick trip to Rock and Snow. Then we departed for our respective homes.
