Flew to Costa Rica. Planned to meet up with Dave, but he was delayed eight
hours by a canceled flight. Ate dinner and walked around San Jose.
12/20
Three weeks ago the La Costa bus company moved from the Caribbean terminal
to the San Carlos terminal. Who knew? With a bit of scrambling I still made
the 10:30am bus and got to Cahuita by 3pm. It is pissing rain here, so I let
the first tout who grabbed me take me to a hostel around the corner from the
bus station. Good choice... clean, comfortable, gorgeous grounds, hot showers,
free kitchen and wifi, friendly Italian owners, and two resident dogs. All for
$9/night. I'm in Shangri La. Literally. That's the hostel's name :)

Walked through Cahuita National Park. Saw an Eyelash Pit Viper! One of the
animals I really hoped to see here in Costa Rica! Got way too close, taking
several photos with a focal distance of eight inches. I did my best to keep
my fingers behind the camera. Hoping that if the snake did strike, it would
hit the camera.
Saw a very active sloth and got some good pictures of him moving in a tree. Also saw one Howler Monkey. Met Jen from the Cahuita Capuchin Project and learned about some behavioral research going on in the park.
After hiking around the park, I walked to the Tree of Life animal sanctuary which was about to close when I got there. Saw an Aguti on the way to the sanctuary which made the walk worthwhile.

Went to visit the Aviarios del Caribe Sloth Sanctuary with my new German friend Lea.

After a full day at the sanctuary we went back to Shangri La and out to a really nice Caribbean restaurant for dinner.

Took off early for Punta Mona. Bus to Manzanillo, then an 8.5km hike to
Punta Mona. Rained the whole time. Hike was very muddy. Enjoyed a warm
shower, warm dinner, and a night in my tent on the beach.
12/24
Spent the day exploring Punta Mona. It rained most of the day, so I took
plenty of breaks with my book in a sheltered hammock. Saw toucans,
hummingbirds, a rarely seen Caecilian, and a momma agouti with a baby! I spent the day stalking
the agoutis trying to get a picture.

Got a tour with Stephen, the founder of Punta Mona.
Saw the agoutis two more
times but never got a picture. The place had been pretty vacant. Not for the
holidays, but because all the interns went to Guatemala for the end of the
world on 12/21/2012. Yup. Anyhow, some folks are filtering back now.
Made chocolate milk and chocolate truffles with Sarah, the director. Learned that I'm mildly allergic to the cacao fruit. My only allergy! To make chocolate we ferment the cacao nuts, then brown them and hull them. After that they are ground to a fine powder and then mixed with coconut (which we also had to grate by hand) and the mixture is ground again. Finally we mix with sugar, nuts, cinnamon, etc. to make truffles. And we cooked and pressed ground coconut to get coconut milk to mix with the chocolate to make hot chocolate. It was delicious. And a lot of work.
Had to blast out of Punta Mona to catch the last bus from Manzanillo to Puerto Viejo. The chocolate fueled sprint got me out in half the time it took to hike in. And I only wiped out in the mud three times. When I hit the river at the edge of Manzanillo, I plunged in fully clothed in an attempt to get somewhat clean. Or at least return to the state of being recognizably human. Stayed at Hostel Pagalu and really appreciated the hot shower. They also have big lockers and individual light/plug combos for each bed. Nice deal for $12.

Meet up with my second German friend, Leona, for the long ride to San Jose.
Made even longer by the bus breaking down. My only bus breakdown for the
entire month in Costa Rica! Much much better than my record three years
ago.
We took the TUASA bus to Alajuela and walked one block to Hostel Maleku. After eating a huge papaya, we cooked an excellent dinner.

Tara and Colin miss their flight. Which is convenient for me. I have time
to do laundry and hang out with Anna-Lis, my third German friend. Germans!
I think they just appreciate my last name.
When T&C finally make it to Costa Rica, we take a taxi to the Musoc bus terminal and hop the first bus to San Isidro. The driver is one of the worst I've ever experienced, and I've had some horrible drivers over the years. Tara and I are both close to puking by the time we get off the bus and meet Dave three hours later.

The four of us tour some permaculture farms near San Isidro. We see
Susana and Miguel at Amrta;
Ed and Jessica at New Dawn;
and Noe's nearby farm.
Then we get the last of the supplies for class and head to Tres Piedras.
12/29
Tour TFI and meet Will and Eric, the current staff. We take a long hike up to
Rolando's farm by the sugar shack and then head back down the hill via
Edgard's property. My bleach and Tara's clif bars save the day when we are
out three hours longer than expected.
After a quick swim we set to work on the electrical
system in the community center.
12/30
Head across the river and put a rope in the Jobo and one Guacimo Colorado.
Then we hike to Paradise and set the tyro. I'm swarmed by ants three
times this day. Fucking ants.
12/31
Hike up the hill to Marvin's trees. We get the Ajillo rigged (thanks to
Dave's two hour romp in the canopy) before the
broken big shot ends our day. In the evening we enjoy a New Year's Eve party
with ice cream, cake, and a gift exchange.

Spend the morning making a new big shot, reinforced with duct tape.
Then back up the hill to Marvin's trees. Tara and I direct aid the facebook
tree while Colin shoots the Fruta Dorada. From there he hand tosses a line
to the Strangler Fig, but we don't climb it.

Colin, Tara and Rolando finish the remaining Guacimo Colorados. Dave and
I go to San Juan for supplies and logistics. We have dinner at TFI with
Will and Eric.

I go to the airport with Juan. All the students arrive with minimal hassle
and we drive back to Tres Piedras with a stop in Tarcoles to see the
crocodiles. Crocodile! (That's for you, Alex)

First class day. We teach a skills round robin in the morning then
swim after lunch. A walk around Tres Piedras to introduce everyone to our
surroundings precedes the pizza party in the evening.

We spend the morning climbing our river trees. After lunch we head to
Paradise to swim and play with the tyro.

Big tree day. We see a sloth on the hike up the hill. Colin attempts
to get to the top of the Strangler Fig and sees an anteater in the tree.
I climb the Fruta Dorada and rotate six students through the tree. Tara
is in the Ajillo with the other students where they realize they are sharing
the tree with a sloth!

Another skills round robin in the morning. After lunch we enjoy some
swimming and harvesting yucca and sugar cane from Marvin's farm. After
dinner Rolando leads us on a night hike.

Everyone is up in the trees in the morning, mostly working on moving around
the tree. In the afternoon we all head to Wilfrido's waterfall. After dinner
we head down to the river to lay on the rocks and gaze at stars.

We hike up the "road" through TFI to reach the sugar shack. Along the way
we enjoy coconuts. Stopping at Miguel's house we eat bananas and oranges.
Then we watch sugar production and head up the hill to see a coffee and
vanilla farm. Did you know that vanilla is the only orchid which is eaten
by people? True fact. According to Dan.
We finish the day by giving everyone a chance to crush some
sugar cane. Then we hull some rice at Miguel's house, and set off down the
road to hike home.

Everyone spends the morning rigging their hammocks in the trees in preparation
for our overnight. The afternoon is swimming and free time. Tara teaches
all the girls how to pee while wearing a harness. Of course, I have my pee
bottle with me... sometimes that Y chromosome
comes in handy! Around 8pm we head up into the trees and everyone is asleep
by 11pm.
1/11
Relaxing day. Everyone hikes to the Bengali Tiger Trap Ceiba. A few stay
to get a line in the tree. The rest hike to Rolando's house to see his
chickens. The group shooting the tree manage to get the correct branch
on the first shot and have it isolated by the end of the day. An unprecedented
performance! Everyone also takes the opportunity to play in the river at
our third swim spot of the trip.
Most evenings there are games of Set, rummy, or spades being
played. Tonight we have a full class game of Mafia going. It runs late
into the evening. At least late by Costa Rica standards. 11pm maybe? But
I'm getting up at 5:30am every day, so 11pm feels pretty late to me.
1/12
Everyone heads to the Ceiba to play in the river and climb the tree. After
lunch we have a huge gear sorting party. Dinner is a big fiesta with the
entire community. We have a slackline, hand ground tortillas, and cake!
1/13
4am wake for airport. Juan drives and I ride shotgun. We drop everyone off
with plenty of time to spare. I'm kinda sad that the class is over, but glad
to enjoy air conditioning and milkshakes at the airport. Life is full of
tradeoffs.
But the class is not forgotten! Colin produces a video. And we have a PDF of the class journal saved for posterity.

We spend the day finishing course paperwork and other instructor tasks.
Around 3pm, Tara and I get a ride to the paved road where we hop a bus
to Quepos. There we hobble down to the Wide Mouth Frog hostel (at least
I'm hobbling under the weight of my pack plus a haul bag full of climbing
gear). The hostel is a reasonably nice place. We cook dinner and crash
for the night.
1/15
Off early to Manuel Antonio National Park. We see the usual collection
of butterflies and crabs and monkeys and lizards. And the most amazing
sight... a male three-toed sloth crossing the trail right in front of us.
They only come down from the trees once or twice a month, so this is
an extremely lucky sighting. I take a zillion pictures while Tara shoots
video. It takes him about three minutes to cross the trail and he doesn't
appear disturbed by our presence. I remember from Aviarios del Caribe
Sloth Sanctuary to not use flash because that can stress the animals.
This is one of the highlights of my life. I could have flown to Costa Rica just for this experience alone. But we still have plenty of time in the park. Tara and I hike all the trails; look at scenic vistas and mushrooms; watch irresponsible visitors feed raccoons and monkeys; and spend hours snorkeling among beautiful fish on the North side of the park. We exit the park only a little after closing.
Back in Quepos we get ice cream before dinner (we usually ate ice cream before dinner, now that I think about it) and watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
1/16
Long day of travel. Bus from Quepos to Puntarenas; then from Puntarenas
to San Ramon; and finally from San Ramon to La Fortuna. In La Fortuna
the first hostel we check out is full, but they direct us to their other
property one block away (good thing because I'm lugging the damn haul bag
full of climbing gear with my pack stacked on top). They have space for
us in the dorm. Where we are the only visitors. So we have basically
a private room, but with extra beds. And a private bathroom. With working
hot water. And air conditioning. All for $10/night. We can't believe our
luck!
1/17
Tara and I head to a free hot springs with Emily and Charlie, a couple
we met at the hostel. The hot spring resorts are about $50/person so getting
taken to a
"locals only" secret spot is quite the score. Thanks guys! After that,
they are nice enough to drive us to the trailhead for the Volcan Chato
trail. This heads up the older, dormant volcano next to Arenal. We hike
up the trail and into the clouds. From the top of the volcano we head
down into the crater and the very impressive lake that fills it. Hiking
back out the way we came in (were we supposed to pay somewhere? Ooops!)
we decide to hike all the way back to La Fortuna. It is a nice walk and
we get some good views of Arenal along the way.
1/18
Up at 4:45am to catch the early bus to San Ramon. From there it is a
short bus ride to Alajuela. We shun the $5 cab ride and walk 3km to Hostel
Maleku. Not a great choice because I'm still hauling the bag full of
climbing gear. Did I say I wasn't going to complain about that? I don't
think I complained much at the time. Tara will probably correct me if
I'm wrong.
We get Tara settled into Maleku since her flight isn't until tomorrow. Then we have time to visit the central park and central market in Alajuela. At that point it is time for me to depart. I walk back to the airport (leaving the bag with Tara, Maleku will transport her to the airport for free and she doesn't pay for her first checked bag). From there two long flights get me back to Syracuse where Rob and Sean greet me at the airport. We drive home discussing our respective international trips over winter break. I have to admit, Rob's trip to Thailand and Sean's trip to Israel both give my Costa Rica trip a run for its money. But -- let's be clear about this -- Costa Rica still wins.
