¡La Playa No Tiene Wifi!
Grandpa's 95th birthday in Florida, then a week in Puerto Rico with Rachel and the kids. In Puerto Rico we spent two days on Vieques, two days in Rincon and one day in El Yunque National Park. The rest of the time was spent in San Juan. Having my flight cancelled in Ithaca made me a full 24 hours late to Florida, but I did have a nice lazy day in Ithaca... pancakes, 12 Years a Slave, bike ride, and Frozen.
Highlight in Vieques was renting two kayaks and going off to a private bay for the day. Paddling, snorkeling, playing in the waves, and lounging on our private beach. In Rincon we were near a fantastic snorkeling beach in a gorgeous house with a large refrigerator for chilling lizards. In San Juan we walked all around the old city (founded in 1521, the oldest city currently under the American flag) especially the old fort of El Morro. We also enjoyed the beach at Condado with its waves... just mild enough to allow safe swimming, but powerful enough to provide a real rollercoaster ride at the break.
Got plenty of beta for my next trip. We were there in the summer when surfing (especially at Rincon) is nonexistent. Also, we were there during the full moon (actually a supermoon) which makes the bioluminescent bays less impressive (and they are touristy, overpriced, and not particularly ecologically healthy). Knew all those things before we got there, but it was worth combining the trip with travel to Florida and matching summer vacation. Next time, I'll go for a week and surf in Rincon. And go see the bioluminescent bays in Tobago or Uganda instead :)
