Waking up in Vegas... once my flight lands.

Start the trip off right climbing Next Century and Chasing Shadows with Andrew. Two new climbs. And Next Century is one of the harder trad multipitch onsights I've managed in Red Rocks.

Single pitch day. Totally Clips is hard. Panty Mime has become much harder since I climbed it a few years ago. No, really, it is actually much harder. I think the edges are rounding out. Also climbed Tonto at Ragged Edges, a good student first lead climb.

Ginger Cracks with Andrew, Dan and Allison. Yeah, we hero rescued some people who were benighted on Power Failure. No big deal.

Solar Slab to Eagle Dance linkup with Emily. We were on top of Solar Slab at 10:18am, my personal best! Lost a bit of motivation on the hike to Eagle Wall. Got a few pitches up Eagle Dance, then descended to get out in time to shower. 17 guidebook pitches for the day, though we simuled much of Solar Slab.

Rest day. Laundry. Dan and Allison's climbing game. Which I won. No big deal.

Ana is the first student to arrive. Emily and I climb Big Bad Wolf with her.

Liana and Ilana on Geronimo. Just because I like the symmetry of their names.

Physical Graffiti with Liana and Greg, then off to Cow Lick for first lead work with Ana and Ilana.

40mph winds with gusts to 60mph wreak havoc on our camp site.

Most students leave in the morning. I take the remainder to Panty Wall where we climb Sacred Undergarment Squeeze Job and Totally Clips.

Jubilant Song with Sammy and Hannah. We park Sammy's Civic at the start of the dirt road, so it is a long walk. Fun climb, but not one I'd choose to do again.

Sammy and I climb Rising Moon. The guidebook calls it 5.5PG, but I'd say 5.3R is more accurate. Don't bother with big gear, just bring a single rack to #3. You can place big pieces, but they don't change the protection rating. One 60m rappel (or two 30m rappels) left of the climb and then scramble back to the base.

Sammy and I climb Ultraman and Clutch Cargo. Kinda hot to be on that wall. Should have climbed in the shade.

Pat and I head to Necromancer. We miss Atras on our first try and get on Dyslexic (One For Jules maybe?) which I'd put at 5.6 on very fragile holds. Then we climb the unnamed 10a right of Atras. It is awesome! That climb should definitely have a name! After that we finally climb Atras. Which is really hard for the grade. I struggle with all the wide moves and get stuck twice when a squeeze shrinks to an offwidth. Ugh. Not my favorite.

Rain rain rain rain. Tammy, Kenny and I head to Joshua Tree. Same rain, more resilient rock.

We head to South Astrodome and climb Breakfast of Champions, Piggle Pugg, My Laundry and Solid Gold. All are stellar! This could be the best climbing day of the entire trip!

Orange Flake with Kenny. Rain and more rain. Bailing takes us about two hours. But we manage to not leave any gear! (For the record, we were willing to leave gear, but we found a 5.2 traverse to 3rd class terrain).

Tammy and I head to Echo Rock where we climb Double Dip, Stitcher Quits, Eff Four, and Heart and Sole. Stitcher Quits is missing the fourth bolt and is definitely X-rated, though the dangerous climbing is 5.4 or easier. Heart and Sole (which, btw, is my 100th pitch for the trip) is another all time favorite JTree route and a very proud onsight. Tammy and I are finding the gems!

We have a few hours to climb before heading back to Vegas for our flights on the 13th. We head to Indian Cove where our plans to climb at Petraeus are stymied by the ankle challenging scrambling required to reach the base. So we climb Pretty Woman and Bad Water to finish the trip.

Home safe and sound. A month in puma territory, and not a scratch on me. Looks like big cats got nothing! Suck it, pumas.
