Rock Climbing --- 3/17/2017 - 4/21/2017 --- Red Rocks
WAS IT WORTH IT?????
Two carabiners, one on each side, the ribbon just the same, but in half
How do you epic on a hot springs day?
3/24 - Calvin and I meet in the afternoon for a quick bit of climbing. We
head to Coco Crag and climb Cocopuss, Stupid Cat, Snagglepuss (on TR), and
Adventure Guppies.
5 pitches, 315'
3/25 - The Nightcrawler with Calvin. Holy shit! What a hard climb! Calvin led
p1 which wasn't bad. I struggled the whole way with p2 and felt like I barely
got it. Calvin heroically led p3. I fell once following and stepped on a few
bolts. Then Calvin continued his heroism by leading p4 because there was no
way I could take that pitch. I led p5 which was a bit fragile, but not bad.
We finished climbing just as the rain started. We finished rappelling just
as the rain intensified and turned to hail. What a day.
5 pitches, 525'
3/26 - Instructors arrive late Saturday. Sunday we wake and scout the Pine
Creek area. Because of wet rock we can't climb, but we look at Dark Shadows
and Birdland. By the afternoon, the darkest rock in direct sun is dry. So
Cathy, Val and I climb Varnishing Point and Heavy Spider Karma (to explore
its potential as a student first lead... it's good). After that we meet
James and Calvin in the Straight Shooter area where we finish up the day.
3 pitches, 220'
3/27 - Tunnel Vision with Val.
6 pitches, 750'
3/28 - Sport scouting with the whole team. Climbed Sweets to the Sweet
at The Hamlet and The Heavy Hitter at Black Corridor.
2 pitches, 145'
3/29 - Climbed Wholesome Fullback with Andrew. Awesome! Led the first
180' in one long pitch. Toproped Our Father on the way down. Fell once and
hung once. Feels like a climb I could lead. Then we went to Triassic Sands.
Still very hard. How did it get downgraded to 10b in the new guidebook? Ugh.
7 pitches, 655'
3/30 - Solar Slab with Val and Cathy. Deterred at the top of p1 by high
winds. Very high winds. Crazy high winds. We stayed in Circus Circus for
the night. Wind speeds of 82mph were recorded in the park.
6 pitches, 800'
3/31 - Rest day!
4/1 - Over The Hill To Grandmother's House with Camille and Ally.
Hard! Fun day.
3 pitches, 350'
4/2 - Moderate Mecca with Andrew, Katrina and Jacob. Climbed Ace of Hearts
and Muckraker. Then Jabba The Hut Rock with Andrew, Rebecca and Jacob.
Climbed the two sport climbs on either side of Shallow Fried Chicken.
4 pitches, 275'
4/3 - First lead work with Rebecca and Kayla at Brass Wall. Climbed Heavy
Spider Karma three times and Topless Twins once. Then big storm. Then sunshine.
Played with anchor cleaning on the first pitch of Dark Shadows.
5 pitches, 320'
4/4 - Frogland with Jacob and Alex. Rain Dance variation start
7 pitches, 770'
4/5 - Scent of Ultraman, Ultraman and Panty Prow with Greg and Sarah.

4/6 - Frogland with Greg and Sarah. 13 of the past 14 days are climbing days.
7 pitches, 770'
4/7 - Hot springs day. Where's your pants? Sure does!
4/8 - Airport day. Dinner with Katie, Danielle, Kevin, Lauren, Joanne
4/9 - Conundrum with Katie and Kenny. Drilling Miss Daisy (twice), Mr. Puppy,
Family Affair. Then to the other side of the mountain for Yin and Yang,
and Atman
6 pitches, 260'
4/10 - Black Dagger with Kenny. Climb was ok, but not great. Glad I did
it.
7 pitches, 880'
4/11 - The Gobbler to the upper pitches of DOWT with Kenny and
Spark Plug with Kenny, Will and Ian. The Gobbler is pretty hard for
the grade. Spark Plug was excellent! Bring as many .4 cams as you can
beg/borrow/steal.
8 pitches, 730'
4/12 - Easy day. Watched Will lead The Fox and took a run at it on toprope.
Then hung out with Will, Seth, and Matt while they played on Caustic.
1 pitch, 120'
4/13 - Hot springs!
4/14 - Olive Oil with Matt.
6 pitches, 665'
