Residence --- 12/24/2001 onward --- Ithaca, NY
Moving back to Ithaca after nearly three years in Alexandria. It has been a blast!
Was difficult to get a driver's license. Turns out I was a registered scofflaw.
I get lots of wildlife even though this is a relatively developed part of Ithaca. Tons of deer, just like everywhere. Bunnies living and breeding in my yard. A whole passel of snakes in my front yard brush pile. A huge woodchuck who munches on my compost pile and eats dandelions like a little kid eating spaghetti. Then there are the squirrels industriously moving nuts from the walnut tree out back to random places around the yard where most will go forgotten. Lots of birds at the bird feeder (and not a single squirrel!) and several nests with eggs and hatchlings over the years.
My favorite sighting is the fox. Spotted him quite clearly one night in my front yard early June 2005. It was a different fox from Tripod, the three-legged fox I used to see occasionally while biking. Tripod lived near the intersection of Pinetree Road and route 366. I'd usually see him while biking at night, but once I saw him during broad daylight heading across the Ag Quad on campus. He seemed to get along quite well with his handicap. He could move fast, and I saw him with a mouse or vole in his mouth once. I assume he had a family because I once saw him with another fox. My last sighting of Tripod was late 2003. I hope he is still doing well somewhere.
Moving into my new house on Westview Lane. The 25' truck and 15' trailer that only went 38mph up hills on Interstate 81 from Maryland to New York. Ithaca, NY -- 12/24/2001 |

The water heater that caught fire and burned 12 hours PRIOR to closing on the house. The good news is that I was able to replace it with the highest efficiency heater sold anywhere. Over the years, the new water heater has probably saved enough money to recover its entire cost. Ithaca, NY -- 12/24/2001 |

Back yard pheasant. This banded male is probably an escapee from the DEC game farm two miles away. This got me thinking about all the rarely seen animals I've observed in the wild. Brown Bear, Black Bear, Moose, Badger, Big Horn Sheep, Dall Sheep, Mountain Goat, Bobcat, Fox, Dolphin, Sea Lion, Seal, Nene. That doesn't include all the animals in Australia and Africa. The same day I saw a deer exhibiting behavior I had never noticed before. As I walked past less than 10' away, its head ratcheted as it followed me, rather than moving smoothly. Biking home from Ithaca Fest, I got caught in a horrific downpour. The reward was this amazing 180 degree rainbow when I reached home. Ithaca -- 6/20/2008 |

Yeah, I just dropped my bike in the front yard and ran inside to grab my camera. Ithaca -- 6/20/2008 |

It was actually a double rainbow. This panorama gives some idea of what it looked like. Though by this point my camera lens was pretty well covered with raindrops. Ithaca -- 6/20/2008 |
